Artist Statement

Maha at work in her studio
I create abstract paintings inspired by Islamic art. I use the ideas behind it rhythm, geometry, repetition, and balance to build my compositions.
I work mainly in drawing, painting, and mixed media. For me, each piece is a process of building and thinking at the same time.
Color and line are important in my work. Color creates feeling, and line guides the eye through the painting, as it does in architecture.
My art works between two things: the structure of my academic training and the freedom of abstraction.
I want my paintings to give you space to pause and think, rather than tell you one exact story.
